Crypturgus cylindricollis

Description

Crypturgus cylindricollis is a species of bark beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family and Scolytinae subfamily. These beetles are relatively small and often overlooked compared to larger bark beetle species, yet they play a significant role in forest pathology, particularly by colonizing coniferous trees in weakened states.

This pest primarily attacks coniferous species such as spruce (Picea), pine (Pinus), and fir (Abies). They exhibit a preference for stressed, dying, or recently wind-thrown trees. However, during periods of mass outbreaks, they are capable of colonizing healthier individuals, specifically targeting thin-barked areas of the stem and branches, which can lead to localized necrosis.

The biology and development cycle are governed by seasonal temperatures. Adults overwinter in the bark of host trees or within the forest floor litter. In the spring, they emerge to infest new host trees. The female excavates a mating gallery where eggs are laid, and the subsequent larvae feed on the phloem and cambium layer, creating complex galleries that disrupt the tree's vascular system.

Symptoms of infestation include small, subtle entrance holes in the bark, often accompanied by faint boring dust. The damage is primarily physiological; the destruction of the cambium interrupts the flow of nutrients and water, eventually leading to the decline of the tree. When populations are dense, the cumulative damage can be substantial, rendering trees susceptible to secondary pathogens and further infestation.

  • Monitor forest stand health regularly.
  • Perform timely sanitation harvesting of infested trees.
  • Remove wind-thrown or storm-damaged wood before beetle emergence.
  • Encourage natural predators and parasitoids in the forest ecosystem.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on prevention. By maintaining high forest hygiene and removing the primary breeding substrates, forest managers can keep populations of Crypturgus cylindricollis below the threshold of economic and ecological significance.
