Little spruce beetle

The little spruce beetle (Crypturgus pusillus) belongs to the Curculionidae family and the Scolytinae subfamily. Known for its extremely small size, this bark beetle is often overlooked, yet it plays a significant role in the degradation of coniferous forest health across its distribution range.

This pest predominantly attacks spruce species (Picea), though it is also found on pine, fir, and larch. It is typically considered a secondary pest, preferring stressed, fallen, or storm-damaged trees, but can occasionally colonize living trees that are weakened by environmental stress, drought, or prior infestation by other beetle species.

The biological development of Crypturgus pusillus begins in early spring. Mating occurs shortly after adult emergence. Females bore through the bark, often utilizing existing holes created by larger bark beetles, and construct gallery systems in the inner bark. The larvae feed on the phloem, creating irregular, winding galleries that disrupt nutrient transport.

The economic and ecological impact of the little spruce beetle is characterized by the girdling effect of its larval galleries. While individually small, a high density of galleries can lead to significant phloem necrosis, weakening the host tree's defense systems and accelerating mortality when combined with other biotic or abiotic stress factors.
