Chicken head louse

Cuclotogaster heterographus, commonly referred to as the chicken head louse, is a species of chewing louse belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Philopteridae. Unlike blood-sucking lice, this pest feeds primarily on feathers, skin debris, and skin secretions, making it a significant nuisance in domestic poultry farming.

This parasite predominantly targets chickens. It is most frequently found on the head and neck regions of the bird, as its mandibles are specifically adapted for cutting through the barbs of feathers in these areas. While they can be found elsewhere on the body, the density is usually highest where the bird's beak cannot easily reach to groom them away.

The biology of the chicken head louse is entirely host-dependent. The life cycle comprises egg, nymphal stages, and adult, all of which occur on the bird. The female glues her eggs to the base of the feathers near the skin. The development from egg to adult is rapid under optimal conditions, allowing for a swift increase in population if not managed correctly.

The damage caused by these lice leads to severe irritation and stress in poultry. Infested birds exhibit constant restlessness, grooming excessively, which results in broken feathers, bald patches, and damaged skin. This persistent discomfort leads to reduced feed conversion efficiency, significant drops in egg production, and increased vulnerability to secondary infections and diseases.

Control measures require a combination of chemical and management practices. Effective management involves:

• Application of approved insecticidal dusts or sprays directly to the birds.
• Thorough cleaning and disinfection of poultry housing to eliminate stragglers.
• Regular monitoring of the flock for signs of lice.
• Preventing contact between domestic birds and wild bird populations that may carry the infestation.
