Pecan weevil

The pecan weevil (Curculio caryae) is a significant pest of hickory and pecan trees, belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This insect is widely recognized by its distinctive long, slender snout, which is particularly elongated in females and is used both for feeding and for the precise placement of eggs within the developing nut.

The pest primarily targets trees in the Carya genus, with a particular affinity for cultivated pecans (Carya illinoinensis). The presence of these weevils in an orchard can lead to severe economic losses, as they directly consume the kernels of the developing nuts, making the crop commercially non-viable for processors and growers alike.

The life cycle of the pecan weevil is quite complex and typically extends over two to three years. Adults emerge from the soil during the summer months, often triggered by rainfall, and migrate to the tree canopy. Once in the tree, they feed on the nuts, and after mating, females drill into the shell to lay their eggs directly into the kernel, where the larvae will eventually develop.

Damage caused by the pecan weevil is characterized by small, circular exit holes in the nutshells. These holes are created by mature larvae as they emerge from the nuts to burrow into the soil, where they will spend the majority of their life cycle in a pupal or diapause state. The inner portion of the nut is often completely destroyed, resulting in significant yield reduction.

Managing the pecan weevil requires a comprehensive integrated pest management (IPM) strategy, which includes:

• Frequent monitoring of adult population levels using specially designed trap systems.
• Application of targeted insecticides during the period when weevils begin to migrate into the trees.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing fallen nuts to disrupt the lifecycle.
• Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and irrigation to mitigate stress.
