Western acorn weevil

The western acorn weevil (Curculio occidentalis) is a beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family. Known for its distinctively long, thin snout, this insect is a significant pest of oak trees. It is well-adapted to environments where various species of Quercus are present, particularly in western North America.

The primary hosts of this species are acorns. Adult females demonstrate remarkable specialized behavior by using their snouts to drill through the tough pericarp of developing acorns to deposit their eggs. Once the egg hatches, the larva begins to feed on the internal tissues, effectively consuming the kernel of the acorn.

The life cycle is tightly synchronized with the growth stages of the host tree. After completing their development inside the acorn, larvae emerge through a characteristic exit hole. They drop to the ground and burrow into the soil to pupate. The insect may remain in the soil as a pupa for one or more seasons before emerging as an adult, a strategy that helps the population survive periods of low acorn production.

Damage caused by Curculio occidentalis is primarily economic and ecological. Infested acorns fail to germinate, which severely limits the natural regeneration of oak stands. Additionally, the feeding activity often introduces fungi and bacteria into the acorn, leading to rot and rendering the fruit useless for wildlife food sources or nursery planting.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling western acorn weevil populations. Sanitation practices, such as removing and destroying infested acorns before larvae emerge, are highly effective on a smaller scale. In forest management or seed orchards, monitoring adult populations during the summer and applying targeted insecticide treatments during the oviposition period can significantly protect the seed crop.
