Cyclocephala hirta

Cyclocephala hirta is a species of beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. Commonly referred to as a type of masked chafer, this insect is a significant subterranean pest. While the adult beetles are often harmless to foliage and do not feed on crops, the larval stage, known as a white grub, poses a severe threat to the root systems of various plants.

This pest affects a broad spectrum of cultivated crops, including potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and ornamental turfgrass. The larvae live entirely underground, feeding on roots and organic matter. Significant damage occurs when the grub population density reaches critical thresholds, leading to stunted plant development, yellowing of leaves, and, in severe cases, the complete death of the plant due to its inability to absorb water and nutrients.

The life cycle typically includes the egg, three larval instars, the pupal stage, and the adult stage. Eggs are laid in moist soil rich in organic material. After hatching, the larvae move through the soil profile, often migrating deeper as temperatures change or as they prepare to pupate. The duration of the life cycle varies depending on climate and environmental conditions, often spanning a full year.

Identification is usually based on finding the characteristic C-shaped grubs during soil excavations in affected fields. Damage is frequently observed in patches where plants appear wilted or are easily pulled from the ground because their root systems have been pruned away. Effective management depends on early detection through soil sampling and monitoring the flight activity of adults using light traps.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Mechanical cultivation, such as deep tilling, to physically disturb larvae and expose them to avian predators.
• Application of biological control agents, including entomopathogenic nematodes or fungi like Beauveria bassiana.
• Crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle and manage soil nutrient levels.
• Judicious use of soil-applied insecticides in high-risk areas where historical infestation data is documented.
