Cyclorhipidion bodoanum
Cyclorhipidion bodoanum
Description
Cyclorhipidion bodoanum is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is a wood-boring pest that is increasingly recognized for its impact on various hardwood species, often exhibiting invasive behavior in urban and forest ecosystems.
This pest attacks a wide range of host plants, including species of Acer (maple), Carpinus (hornbeam), and Quercus (oak), as well as various fruit trees. It typically targets trees that have been weakened by environmental stressors like drought, heat, or mechanical damage, making them vulnerable to infestation.
The biology of this species is characterized by an obligatory symbiotic relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adult females carry fungal spores in specialized structures called mycangia. Once they bore into the host tree, they inoculate the walls of their tunnels with the fungus, which serves as the primary food source for the developing larvae.
The damage is caused by the tunneling activity of the beetles, which disrupts the tree’s xylem and phloem. This often results in branch dieback, crown thinning, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree. Infested trees are often identifiable by fine, sawdust-like frass accumulating at the base or emerging from tiny entry holes in the bark.
Integrated pest management (IPM) for Cyclorhipidion bodoanum includes the following strategies:
- Strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infested wood before new generations emerge.
- Monitoring beetle populations using localized trapping systems to time insecticide applications accurately.
- Improving tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to enhance natural defense mechanisms.
- Preventive trunk spraying with systemic insecticides in areas where the pest is established and high-risk periods occur.
