Description

Cylindrocopturus is a genus of weevils belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). These beetles are recognized as significant agricultural pests, particularly known for their impact on sunflower cultivation and other Asteraceae crops in North American agricultural systems.

The host range of this pest primarily includes commercial sunflowers. Adult beetles feed on the foliage of the plants, but the most severe damage is caused by the larval stage. Larvae bore into the stalk of the plant, creating extensive tunnels that compromise the internal structure and health of the sunflower.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs near the base of the plant or on the leaf petioles. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae burrow into the stem, where they feed throughout their developmental stages, significantly interfering with the plant's nutrient transport system.

Damage caused by Cylindrocopturus manifests as wilting, premature ripening, and structural weakening of the stalks. In heavily infested fields, plants are prone to lodging during wind events, which complicates harvesting and results in significant yield losses and reduced seed quality in terms of oil content.
