Douglas fir twig weevil

The Douglas fir twig weevil (Cylindrocopturus furnissi) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a notable forest pest that primarily targets Douglas fir trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Its presence is often underestimated until visible damage appears on the branches and main stems of younger trees.

The primary host for this beetle is the Douglas fir. The pest specifically focuses its activities on young, vigorous trees or those experiencing environmental stress. By selecting these hosts, the weevil can significantly impede the development of the stand, causing deformities and reducing the overall growth rate of the plantation.

The life cycle begins with the female depositing eggs into the bark of young twigs or the main stem. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the phloem and cambium layers. This feeding activity is destructive, as it disrupts the tree's vascular system, preventing the effective transport of water and nutrients throughout the branch or stem.

Damage symptoms manifest as small entry holes in the bark, accompanied by resinosis (sap flow). Heavily infested branches often show signs of chlorosis, followed by needle drop and eventually the dieback of the branch or top of the tree. When infestations are high, the tree may exhibit stunted growth, a distorted shape, and an overall decline in health.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation. Key approaches include:

• Maintaining optimal site conditions to encourage rapid tree growth, making them less susceptible to infestation.
• Removing and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the beetle population within the stand.
• Applying systemic insecticides on high-value trees or in nursery settings during the adult flight period.
• Conducting regular forest health inspections to detect the early signs of larval activity.
