Description

The beet stem weevil (Cyphocleonus) belongs to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is a specialized agricultural pest known for infesting beet crops, where its larvae develop inside the plant tissues, causing significant structural and physiological damage to the host.

This pest primarily affects sugar beets, table beets, and fodder beets. Besides commercial crops, it can thrive on various weed species within the Chenopodiaceae family, which serve as alternative food sources and breeding grounds, maintaining the pest population throughout the year.

The life cycle of the beet stem weevil follows a single-generation pattern. Adults overwinter in the soil or under plant debris, emerging in early spring. Following mating, females lay eggs in the crown or petioles of the beets. The larvae subsequently tunnel into the taproot, spending their entire growth cycle protected within the plant structure.

The primary damage is caused by the larval stage as they excavate tunnels inside the beet root. This feeding activity disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, weakens the plant, and facilitates secondary infections such as root rot. Heavy infestations result in deformed roots, lower weight, and significantly reduced sugar content.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

  • Crop rotation with non-host plants to break the pest cycle.
  • Deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering sites.
  • Strict weed management, particularly targeting Chenopodiaceae species.
