Cyrtobagous is a genus of weevils belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are specialized phytophagous organisms that have evolved to feed exclusively on aquatic ferns. Unlike many other agricultural pests, this genus is widely recognized in agronomy and ecology as a highly effective agent for the biological control of invasive aquatic weeds.

The primary target plant for this weevil is salvinia (most notably Salvinia molesta). Within both their native habitats and areas of introduction, larvae and adults feed on the tissues of the plant, eventually leading to its collapse and death. Due to their extreme dietary specialization, Cyrtobagous poses no threat to field crops, acting instead as a specific regulator of biomass in freshwater ecosystems.

The biology of this species is intricately linked to an aquatic environment. Adult weevils inhabit the leaf surface, while females deposit eggs into the tissues of young shoots or rhizomes. Larval development occurs internally within the stems, which disrupts the plant's metabolism and vascular system. The life cycle length depends heavily on water and air temperatures, typically ranging from 30 to 45 days under optimal conditions.

The damage caused by the insect is characterized by the browning, deformation, and subsequent decay of the salvinia mats where the larvae have fed. The weevil is capable of completely destroying dense mats of weeds that block light and oxygen from entering the water body. The degree of effectiveness against this weed is so high that the insect is intentionally introduced to manage infested irrigation canals and lakes, making it a beneficial organism in a professional agricultural context.

Management strategies involving Cyrtobagous focus on classical biological control methods. Agronomists carry out the introduction of laboratory-reared populations into infected water bodies. A critical factor for success is maintaining the appropriate density of the entomophage and monitoring local climatic conditions, as the activity and efficiency of the weevil can decrease significantly during extreme temperature fluctuations.
