Dacryphalus bark beetle

The Dacryphalus genus belongs to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. These small beetles are specialized xylophages, commonly known as bark beetles. Within the order Coleoptera, they play a significant role in forest ecosystems, acting as both decomposers of dead wood and dangerous pests when population levels surge within living coniferous stands.

These insects primarily target various juniper species and other related conifers. They are typically attracted to trees that are already stressed due to drought, mechanical damage, or poor site conditions. However, in epidemic years, they can cause widespread mortality in healthy forest tracts, significantly impacting both aesthetic and timber values.

The biology of Dacryphalus is centered around its life under the bark. After mating, females excavate galleries where they deposit eggs. The resulting larvae feed extensively on the phloem and cambium layers. This feeding activity disrupts the vascular system of the tree, effectively cutting off the supply of nutrients and water to the crown, which causes the tree to turn brown and eventually die.

Damage symptoms are often first observed by the presence of boring dust (frass) accumulating in bark crevices or at the base of the trunk. Upon closer inspection, complex galleries can be found beneath the bark. The physiological impact is lethal; as the tree loses its ability to transport sap, it becomes susceptible to secondary infections and rapid decline.

Management and protection strategies require an integrated approach to maintain tree health:

• Regular forest sanitation, including the prompt removal of infested material.
• Installation of pheromone traps to monitor adult beetle flight activity and reduce local population pressure.
• Application of systemic insecticides or protective trunk sprays for high-value ornamental trees.
• Promotion of stand vigor through silvicultural practices such as thinning and irrigation to improve natural defense mechanisms.
