Systematic position. Dactylotrypes longicollis is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. As a bark beetle, it has evolved to specialize in infesting coniferous trees, particularly those within the Abies genus. Its taxonomy places it within a group of beetles known for their complex galleries under the bark.

Affected crops. The primary host plants for this pest are fir trees (Abies species). The beetle is frequently found in managed forests, parks, and tree nurseries. It primarily targets stressed trees, but dense populations can successfully attack and kill healthy trees, making it a significant concern for silviculture and arboriculture.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when adult beetles bore into the bark to establish maternal galleries. Eggs are laid along the sides of these tunnels. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the cambium and phloem layers. The development involves distinct larval instars, followed by pupation within the galleries, eventually emerging as new adults to restart the cycle.

Damage and economic impact. The primary economic damage is caused by the larval feeding activity, which creates extensive galleries that sever the vascular tissue of the host tree. This disruption of nutrient and water transport leads to crown dieback, chlorosis, and eventually tree death. Infested trees lose their commercial value for timber and become fire hazards.
