Avocado scale

Davidsonaspis aguacatae is a destructive scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. This specific pest poses a significant threat to avocado (Persea americana) production worldwide, causing substantial economic losses in commercial orchards if left unmanaged.

The pest primarily targets the branches, twigs, and leaves of the host tree. By anchoring themselves to the plant tissue, these insects extract vital sap, which deprives the tree of essential nutrients. The presence of the pest is often identified by the appearance of armored covers on the surface of the bark or leaf veins, which act as a shield against external threats.

The life cycle involves a dispersal phase where young nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the plant or are spread by wind and human activity. Once a suitable site is found, the crawler settles, develops its characteristic scale armor, and transitions into a sedentary stage. Adult females are protected by these hard scales, making them highly resistant to many standard contact insecticides.

Damage caused by this scale insect includes chlorosis, branch dieback, and stunted growth. In severe infestations, the accumulation of pests creates crusts on the wood, leading to bark splitting and providing entry points for secondary plant pathogens. This weakening of the host tree significantly reduces both the volume and quality of the avocado harvest.

Management strategies focus on:

• Regular monitoring of orchards during the crawler emergence phase.
• Pruning and destruction of heavily infested branches to reduce local population pressure.
• Application of targeted systemic insecticides or horticultural oils to suffocate the insects.
• Biological control through the encouragement of natural predators such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps.
• Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the movement of infested nursery stock.
