Description
The genus Dendroctonus, commonly known as bark beetles, belongs to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are among the most significant pests of coniferous forests globally, causing widespread mortality in pine, spruce, and larch stands across vast geographical regions.
Bark beetles primarily infest coniferous tree species. While they often target stressed trees, such as those weakened by drought, disease, or fire, high-density populations can overcome the natural defenses of even vigorous trees through mass attacks, utilizing aggregation pheromones to coordinate their actions.
The biological cycle of these beetles is completed beneath the tree bark. Adult females initiate gallery construction in the phloem, where they deposit eggs. Upon hatching, larvae feed gregariously or individually on the inner bark. The interruption of nutrient flow, combined with the beetle's symbiotic relationship with blue-stain fungi, accelerates tree death.
