Description

Systematic position: The Douglas fir beetle (Dendroctonus pseudotsugae) is classified within the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). It is recognized as one of the most destructive forest pests affecting coniferous ecosystems in Western North America.

Host plants: The primary host is the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). While healthy trees can sometimes defend themselves by producing resin to flush out attacking beetles, stressed trees—due to fire, drought, or root disease—are highly susceptible to colonization.

Biology and life cycle: The beetle typically completes one generation per year. Adults emerge in early spring to locate new host trees. They bore through the outer bark and create egg galleries in the phloem layer, where larvae subsequently feed, further disrupting the tree's vascular system.

Damage symptoms: Infestation is first characterized by the presence of boring dust in bark crevices and pitch tubes. As the beetles destroy the cambium layer, the tree loses the ability to transport nutrients. Symptoms include the canopy turning from green to yellowish-red, eventually resulting in total tree mortality.

Management strategies: Integrated pest management is crucial for mitigating damage. This includes thinning dense stands to improve tree vigor and conducting prompt salvage logging of infested timber. Monitoring programs using pheromone-baited traps are essential to track population trends and timing of beetle flight.
