Wavy-lined moth

Systematic position. The Wavy-lined moth (Dendrolimus undans) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae. It is a significant defoliator, known for causing periodic outbreaks in forested areas, affecting both coniferous and broad-leaved species.

Affected crops. The pest primarily targets coniferous trees, especially pine species, but is also capable of feeding on various deciduous trees. This includes orchard trees such as apple trees, which poses a threat to commercial fruit production when orchards are adjacent to infested woodland.

Biology and life cycle. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on needles or foliage. The larvae are the main destructive stage, feeding aggressively. Overwintering occurs during the larval stage, typically within the forest floor or sheltered bark crevices, allowing them to resume feeding early in the spring.

Damage and pest status. The larvae possess strong mouthparts that allow them to consume large quantities of foliage. Massive infestations can result in complete defoliation of host trees. This loss of photosynthetic surface area stresses the trees, making them susceptible to secondary infections and reducing wood quality, which can eventually lead to widespread mortality within the forest stand.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. Pheromone traps are widely used to detect population peaks. Biological control agents, including specific bacterial formulations, are preferred to reduce environmental impact. In cases of severe outbreaks, targeted insecticide applications are implemented to protect valuable stands, alongside silvicultural practices that improve overall tree vigor.
