Description

Systematic position. Derelomus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (true weevils). These beetles are known for their highly specialized ecological niche, often restricted to the inflorescences of specific tropical plant species.

Affected crops. The primary concern regarding Derelomus is its impact on oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations. By colonizing the inflorescences, these beetles can negatively influence the reproductive success of the palms, which is a major concern for the global vegetable oil industry.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle of Derelomus is strictly synchronized with the flowering phenology of the host plant. Female weevils lay eggs into the male inflorescences, where the larvae hatch and begin feeding on the floral tissues. The larvae undergo several developmental stages inside the plant tissue before pupating and emerging as adults.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The feeding activity of both adults and larvae can cause significant physiological damage to the flowers, often leading to necrosis or premature decay of the inflorescence. The presence of the pest also disrupts the pollination process, directly resulting in reduced fruit set and lower oil yield per hectare.
