Dermolepida

Description

Dermolepida (Dermolepida albohirtum), commonly known as the greyback cane beetle, is a significant member of the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. This insect is widely recognized as a primary agricultural pest, specifically targeting sugarcane plantations in tropical zones.

The host range is primarily limited to sugarcane, where the beetle causes extensive damage. The larvae, also known as white grubs, live underground and feed exclusively on the root systems of the crop. By severing the roots, they inhibit the plant's ability to absorb water and essential nutrients, leading to poor growth and significant yield losses.

The life cycle of the beetle is typically annual, consisting of an egg stage, three larval instars, a pupal stage, and an adult phase. The larval stage is the most destructive period, as the grubs grow significantly and consume large amounts of plant roots throughout the growing season, preparing for their metamorphosis into adults.

Symptoms of infestation include premature yellowing of leaves, stunted growth, and a tendency for the stalks to lodge or be easily pulled out of the ground due to the lack of structural root support. Large areas of a plantation may display these symptoms, significantly reducing the commercial viability of the cane crop.

  • Application of granular or systemic soil-applied insecticides.
  • Utilizing biological control agents such as Metarhizium fungus.
  • Implementing appropriate fallow periods or rotating crops.
  • Installing light traps to monitor adult beetle flight activity.

To mitigate the impact of Dermolepida, farmers must adopt an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. This involves assessing the soil moisture levels and pest density levels before planting. Combined with the precise application of chemical and biological treatments, this approach remains the most effective method for securing sugarcane production against this destructive beetle.
