Description

The Diaprepes abbreviatus, commonly known as the Diaprepes root weevil, is a highly destructive insect belonging to the family Curculionidae. Originally native to the Caribbean, it has become a major agricultural pest in various subtropical regions, causing significant economic losses to citrus orchards, ornamental nurseries, and a vast range of commercial food crops.

Taxonomically, this species is categorized within the order Coleoptera. Adult weevils are recognizable by their distinct snout and a body length ranging from 10 to 25 mm. Their coloration is highly variable, often featuring intricate patterns of black and light-colored scales on the elytra, which helps them camouflage effectively against the bark and leaves of host plants.

The biological life cycle of this pest is complex and poses challenges for control. Adult females deposit eggs in masses between leaves that they glue together. Upon hatching, the larvae drop to the ground, burrow into the soil, and begin feeding on the root system of the plant. The larval stage is subterranean, making the pest extremely difficult to detect until significant damage to the plant's vascular system has already occurred.

The damage caused by Diaprepes is twofold. Adults feed on the margins of leaves, creating notched edges, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity. However, the most severe damage is caused by the root-feeding larvae. They consume the bark of the roots, which disrupts the uptake of water and nutrients. This often leads to chlorosis, general tree decline, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to secondary root rot pathogens, ultimately leading to plant death.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Strategies include:

  • Visual monitoring and the use of yellow sticky traps to track adult population levels.
  • Application of entomopathogenic nematodes to the soil to target larvae.
  • Judicious use of foliar insecticides to control adult populations during emergence peaks.
  • Strict quarantine protocols to prevent the transport of infested nursery stock or soil containing larvae.
