Description
Diapus is a genus of wood-boring beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae and the subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are well-known in forestry as significant pests that specifically target the inner tissues of various tree species, often causing extensive damage to both standing timber and freshly harvested logs.
These beetles are primarily attracted to trees that are stressed, injured, or recently felled, although aggressive outbreaks can impact healthy forest stands. Their hosts include a variety of tropical and subtropical woody plants, where they bore deep, intricate gallery systems that compromise the structural integrity of the affected trees.
The biology of Diapus is closely linked to symbiotic fungi, which the adults introduce into their galleries. These fungi serve as the primary nutritional source for the larvae. The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult, with the entire developmental process taking place within the timber itself, hidden from predators.
Damage caused by Diapus is easily identified by the presence of small entrance holes on the bark and fine frass expelled from the galleries. The resulting damage, known as "pinhole" defects, significantly degrades the quality and market value of the timber. Furthermore, the introduction of pathogenic fungi can accelerate wood decay and lead to tree mortality.
Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management practices. Key strategies include the prompt removal and destruction of infested logs to disrupt the life cycle, maintaining forest hygiene to reduce breeding sites, and monitoring populations with traps. Chemical control is generally limited due to the cryptic nature of the larvae living deep inside the wood.
