The minute ambrosia beetle (Diapus pusillimus) is a significant wood-boring insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. As an ambrosia beetle, it exhibits a complex symbiotic relationship with specialized fungi, which it introduces into the wood to serve as a food source for its larvae.

This beetle primarily targets tropical and subtropical hardwood species. While it often attacks stressed or dying trees, high population densities allow it to infest standing healthy trees, significantly impacting forest health and the commercial value of the timber within its geographic distribution.

The biological cycle involves the adults excavating radial galleries deep into the sapwood and heartwood. These galleries serve as nurseries where the beetles cultivate fungal gardens. Larvae do not feed directly on the wood; instead, they consume the mycelium of the symbiotic fungi introduced by their parents, ensuring the rapid development of the colony within the host plant.

The damage caused by Diapus pusillimus is severe. The tunnels create aesthetic and structural degradation, while the associated fungal colonization causes discoloration, often known as "ambrosia staining." This renders the affected timber susceptible to decay and unsuitable for high-quality wood manufacturing or furniture production.
