Caucasian scale

The Caucasian scale (Diaspidiotus caucasicus) is a destructive pest belonging to the Diaspididae family, order Hemiptera. This insect is characterized by the formation of a hard, protective shield that covers its body, providing significant defense against environmental stress and external chemical treatments, making it a difficult pest to control in commercial orchards.

The primary hosts of this pest include a wide range of pome and stone fruits, such as apple, pear, plum, peach, and various ornamental trees. The pest feeds by inserting its specialized mouthparts into the plant tissue, extracting essential nutrients and sap, which severely impacts the physiological state of the infested host plant.

The life cycle of Diaspidiotus caucasicus is generally comprised of one to two generations per year depending on regional climatic conditions. Overwintering typically occurs in the first or second instar larval stage, tucked away in bark crevices or under loose bark scales. As spring temperatures rise, these larvae mature and begin their active feeding and reproductive cycle.

Damage caused by the Caucasian scale is multifaceted. Infested branches often show signs of necrosis, bark cracking, and general dieback due to the removal of vital fluids. When the infestation reaches the fruit, it leads to unsightly spots, pitting, and deformation, rendering the produce commercially unviable and lowering the overall health of the tree canopy.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this pest. Recommended practices include:

• Pruning and removing heavily infested wood during the dormant season.
• Applying horticultural oils in early spring to smother overwintering nymphs.
• Using systemic insecticides during the peak crawler activity period.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and parasitic wasps.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation.
