Elaeagnus scale

The Elaeagnus scale (Diaspidiotus elaeagni) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. These insects are notorious for forming hard, protective covers over their bodies, which provide effective shelter against environmental stressors and many traditional contact pesticide applications.

This species primarily infests plants in the Elaeagnaceae family, with Elaeagnus angustifolia being a frequent host. However, the pest is also capable of colonizing various other woody ornamental and fruit-bearing plants, often proliferating in urban landscapes, parks, and home gardens where host plants are densely planted.

The life cycle of the Elaeagnus scale is highly adapted to host survival. Females are sessile and spend their entire life under a protective scale, producing eggs that hatch into mobile first-instar nymphs, commonly called "crawlers." These crawlers are the primary dispersal stage, moving across the plant surface to locate suitable feeding sites before settling and secreting their own protective wax covers.

The damage caused by this pest is mainly attributed to the sap-sucking activity of both nymphs and adult females. By removing essential fluids, the insect causes the weakening of branches, stunted growth, and canopy thinning. Severe infestations can lead to limb dieback, bark cracking, and in extreme cases, the total death of the host plant if left untreated.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect effectively:

• Regular monitoring of twigs and stems for the presence of scale covers, especially in early spring.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the overall insect population density.
• Application of horticultural oils during the dormant season to suffocate overwintering nymphs.
• Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence period for maximum efficacy.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and parasitic wasps, to suppress scale populations in managed landscapes.
