Legume scale

The legume scale (Diaspidiotus leguminosum) is a destructive species of scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. Like other armored scales, it is characterized by the production of a hard, wax-like covering that protects the insect throughout its sedentary life stage. This shield makes it highly resistant to environmental stressors and traditional contact pesticides.

The host range of Diaspidiotus leguminosum primarily involves various leguminous plants. It typically infests the bark of branches and stems, drawing essential nutrients directly from the plant's vascular system. This constant removal of sap severely weakens the host, leading to a general decline in plant vigor over several seasons.

The insect's life cycle revolves around the crawler stage, which is the only period when the pest is mobile and vulnerable. After hatching, crawlers move across the plant surface to find a suitable feeding site, settle down, and begin the process of secreting their characteristic scale. Once established, they become permanent fixtures on the plant tissue, focusing entirely on growth and reproduction.

Damage caused by this pest is systemic and cumulative. Common symptoms include chlorosis, stunting of new growth, and the gradual dieback of infested limbs. In severe cases of infestation, the presence of these insects can significantly reduce fruit set and yield, and in nursery settings, it may lead to the total rejection of plant material due to quarantine regulations.

Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Timing is critical; applications of insecticides are most effective when applied during the crawler emergence phase. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including pruning and destruction of heavily infested plant parts, alongside the use of horticultural oils, are essential to maintain populations below economic thresholds.
