Description
The lenticular scale (Diaspidiotus lenticularis) is a damaging insect species within the Diaspididae family, order Hemiptera. As an armored scale, it is characterized by the protective waxy covering that makes it a persistent and difficult-to-control pest in orchards and citrus plantations.
This pest mainly attacks various citrus trees, such as oranges, lemons, and mandarins, but is also known to infest other fruit-bearing and ornamental trees. By feeding on the plant's sap, the scale insect disrupts the transport of nutrients, leading to reduced vigor and stunted growth in affected specimens.
The biological cycle of this species includes egg, mobile nymph (crawler), and sessile adult stages. The crawlers are the primary means of dispersal within and between trees, often carried by wind, birds, or human activity. Once settled, the nymphs begin to build their protective shield, which acts as a barrier against many environmental threats and contact insecticides.
The damage is evident in the presence of distinct markings on the bark and fruit surface, which often lead to deformation. Heavy infestations cause leaves to yellow and drop prematurely, branch dieback, and significantly reduced crop yield. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew can foster the growth of sooty mold, further damaging the aesthetic and commercial quality of the fruit.
