Grape scale

The grape scale (lat. Diaspidiotus uvae) is a significant pest belonging to the family Diaspididae. This scale insect is known for its ability to infest grapevines, causing physiological damage by extracting sap from the bark and canes, which can lead to reduced vigor and declining yields in infested vineyards.

The pest primarily targets the grapevine (Vitis spp.), favoring the woody parts of the vine such as the trunk, cordons, and canes. Because of its small size and the protective waxy shield it secretes, the insect often goes unnoticed until significant colony populations are established on the plants.

The life cycle of the grape scale involves an overwintering stage followed by the emergence of nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers." These crawlers are the primary dispersal stage of the pest; they are mobile and move across the surface of the vine before settling down to feed and develop their protective armor, making them the most susceptible target for control.

Damage caused by Diaspidiotus uvae is cumulative and manifests as structural weakening of the vine. Heavy infestations lead to bark cracking, stunted cane growth, and yellowing foliage. Over time, the vitality of the vineyard declines, making the vines more susceptible to secondary infections and abiotic stresses, which may ultimately lead to branch death.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling grape scale populations:

• Regular pruning and removal of old, infested bark to reduce overwintering sites.
• Application of dormant oil sprays to smother the insects during the winter months.
• Targeted chemical treatments during the crawler emergence period to maximize efficacy.
• Monitoring vine health through regular scouting and inspection of stems.
• Encouraging natural predator populations, such as lady beetles and parasitic wasps.
