Diaspis

The genus Diaspis belongs to the family Diaspididae, representing a group of armored scale insects. These are specialized sucking pests characterized by the presence of a tough, protective scale cover formed from waxy secretions and exuviae. As agricultural pests, they are recognized for their ability to thrive on a variety of hosts and their resilience against external environmental factors.

These pests primarily target succulent plants, including various species of cacti, as well as several ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. Their host range can be extensive in greenhouse environments, where the lack of natural predators and stable temperatures allow for year-round reproduction and rapid population explosions across large plant collections.

The biology of Diaspis is defined by significant sexual dimorphism. Adult females are sessile, remaining attached to the plant surface throughout their life while feeding on sap. Adult males are small, winged insects capable of flight, facilitating dispersal and mating. The lifecycle involves the egg stage, the crawler stage (the primary dispersal phase), and the adult stage, with the crawler being the most vulnerable to interventions.

Damage caused by these insects includes leaf discoloration, chlorosis, and general wilting of infested stems. Chronic infestations lead to stunted growth, tissue deformation, and eventual plant death. Furthermore, the feeding punctures often create entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can cause rotting of the plant tissue around the infestation site.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach, including strict quarantine measures for new plant introductions and regular inspection of existing stock. Mechanical control involves pruning and destroying heavily infested plant segments. Chemical control relies on systemic insecticides applied during the crawler emergence period, as the waxy armor of mature scales provides high resistance to contact-based pesticide applications.
