Systematic position: The Boisduval scale (Diaspis boisduvalii) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These small insects are known for their protective armor, known as a scale, which is secreted by the insect. This adaptation allows them to remain attached to host plants while feeding on their phloem sap, making them resilient to various environmental stressors.

Host plants: This pest is a major threat in greenhouse environments and interior plantscapes. It primarily attacks orchids (especially Cattleya and Oncidium species), palms, bromeliads, and cacti. Its ability to thrive in warm, humid conditions makes it a persistent nuisance for indoor plant collectors and professional nursery operators alike.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, the active crawler stage, and the sedentary adult stage. Female scales remain stationary under their waxy shells, where they lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny crawlers disperse across the plant surface to find a suitable feeding site. After selecting a spot, they insert their mouthparts and begin developing their own protective covering.

Damage and harmfulness: The primary harm caused by Boisduval scale is the continuous removal of sap, which depletes the plant's resources. Infested areas typically show signs of chlorosis, where yellow or white spots appear at the feeding sites. Over time, leaves may become distorted, develop necrotic patches, and drop prematurely. Heavy infestations can significantly stunt growth and lead to the eventual death of the plant.

Protection measures: Managing this pest requires persistent effort due to the protective scale covering.
