Pineapple scale

Systematic position: The pineapple scale (Diaspis bromeliae) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These small scale insects are specialized sap-feeders that have adapted to parasitize a wide range of host plants, particularly within the Bromeliad family, often causing significant stress to indoor crops.

Host plants: This pest primarily affects pineapples (Ananas comosus) and various ornamental bromeliads such as Guzmania, Vriesea, and Aechmea. It thrives in controlled environments like greenhouses and residential interiors where natural predators are absent, allowing populations to expand rapidly.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves eggs, motile nymphs (crawlers), and sessile adults. Females produce a circular, waxy shield that covers their bodies and protects the eggs. Once the crawlers settle on a leaf surface, they insert their mouthparts, remain stationary for the rest of their lives, and develop their protective armor.

Damage and severity: By extracting sap, Diaspis bromeliae causes chlorosis and localized tissue death. Symptoms include yellow spotting, leaf curling, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the foliage becomes discolored and brittle, significantly reducing the aesthetic value and physiological health of the plant.

Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach. Physical removal of scales using a soft brush dipped in alcohol can manage light infestations. For severe outbreaks, systemic insecticides are the most effective choice, as they ensure the plant tissues contain compounds toxic to the sap-feeding insects.
