Systematic position. Diaspis gilloglyi is a species of armored scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. These insects are known as significant pests in indoor horticultural settings, where they can proliferate rapidly under controlled environmental conditions.

Host range. The primary hosts for Diaspis gilloglyi are plants in the Arecaceae family. It is particularly common on Chamaedorea species. These ornamental palms are highly susceptible to infestations, which can severely impact their aesthetic value and overall health in commercial nurseries and private greenhouses.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages including eggs, mobile crawlers, and sessile adults. Females produce a waxy protective scale that shields them from predators and environmental stressors. The crawler stage is the primary period for dispersal, during which the insect moves across plant surfaces before settling to feed permanently.

Damage and impact. Damage is caused by the insect feeding on plant sap. Symptoms include chlorosis, leaf stunting, and tissue necrosis. Severe infestations often lead to reduced plant vigor, poor growth rates, and in critical cases, the death of the plant due to persistent nutritional depletion.

Control measures. Effective management requires an integrated approach. Chemical control involving systemic insecticides is often necessary due to the protection provided by the scale cover. Regular monitoring, strict quarantine of new plants, and the physical removal of heavily infested leaves are essential practices to keep the population under control.
