Sculptured pine borer

The Sculptured pine borer (scientific name Dicerca pugionata) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae within the order Coleoptera. Although common names may vary, this specific species is recognized as a technical pest of deciduous trees, often targeting wood that is structurally compromised or physiologically stressed.

The host range of Dicerca pugionata primarily includes various species within the Rosaceae family. Significant damage is often observed on hawthorn (Crataegus), mountain ash (Sorbus), and serviceberry (Amelanchier). These trees are particularly susceptible when exposed to environmental stressors such as drought, poor soil quality, or physical damage from landscaping equipment.

The biology of this species is characterized by a multi-stage life cycle, with the most destructive phase occurring during the larval stage. Female beetles lay eggs in the crevices of bark. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, constructing galleries under the bark. These galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients in the phloem and cambium layers, severely weakening the tree's health.

Damage assessment reveals that the primary threat is the cumulative effect of larval mining. Infested trees frequently exhibit foliage thinning, branch dieback, and bark cracking. In severe cases, the structural integrity of the wood is compromised. The presence of oval-shaped exit holes on the bark is a clear indicator that the adult beetles have emerged, signaling an established infestation.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to tree care. Key strategies include:

• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
• Prompt removal and destruction of infested branches or heavily colonized trees.
• Applying systemic or contact insecticides during the adult flight season.
• Monitoring through visual inspection for frass or exit holes.
