Description

Systematic position. The genus Didesmococcus belongs to the family Coccidae (soft scales) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are sedentary parasites that remain fixed on the host plant for most of their adult lives, protecting themselves with a hardened, waxy integument.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets stone fruit trees. Commercial orchards of plums, apricots, peaches, and cherries are most susceptible. It thrives in temperate climates, where it can easily colonize weakened or poorly maintained trees, eventually spreading throughout the entire orchard if left uncontrolled.

Biology and lifecycle. The species typically produces one generation per year. Winter is spent in the second-instar larval stage, usually hidden within bark crevices or on the undersides of twigs. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on phloem sap, maturing into females. Following mating, the females deposit large numbers of eggs, which hatch into mobile crawlers that disperse to new feeding sites.

Nature of damage and economic importance. By extracting significant amounts of phloem sap, Didesmococcus causes general tree decline, stunting of new shoots, and chlorosis of foliage. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight from leaves and makes fruit unmarketable. High infestation levels can lead to the death of smaller branches.

Control measures. Integrated pest management is essential. Key strategies include:

  • Dormant oil applications in early spring to smother overwintering larvae.
  • Systemic insecticide sprays timed precisely with the emergence of the crawler stage.
  • Pruning and removing heavily infested branches to reduce the total population.
  • Encouraging natural predators, such as parasitoid wasps and lady beetles, which help regulate population numbers in sustainable orchard systems.
