Description
The Korean soft scale (Didesmococcus koreanus) is a significant insect pest belonging to the family Coccidae (soft scales) within the order Hemiptera. It is primarily recognized for its negative impact on woody horticultural crops. Due to its cryptic appearance and habit of feeding on bark, it often goes undetected until heavy infestations have already caused visible decline in tree vigor.
The host range of this pest includes various species within the Rosaceae family. Fruit trees such as apples, pears, and plums are highly susceptible to colonization. The scale insects settle on twigs, branches, and trunks, where they form firm, shell-like structures and extract essential phloem sap, which significantly drains the plant's resources.
The biological cycle of Didesmococcus koreanus involves one generation per year. The insect overwinters as second-instar nymphs sheltered in bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, these nymphs resume feeding and develop into reproductive females. Egg-laying typically occurs in late spring or early summer, followed by the emergence of active crawlers that move to new growth sites on the host plant.
Damage caused by the scale includes stunted shoot growth, leaf yellowing, and general dieback of twigs. In cases of high infestation, the tree's health is severely compromised, making it susceptible to secondary stressors such as drought and winter injury. Additionally, the production of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the tree's overall productivity.

Regular scouting is the best tool for an agronomist to detect the early signs of infestation and implement control measures before significant damage occurs.
