Description
Systematic position: The hairy chinch bug (Dimorphopterus pilosus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Rhyparochromidae. It is a specialized pest that has adapted to cereal agroecosystems, often causing localized outbreaks in fields with specific soil and moisture conditions.
Host crops: The primary hosts for this insect are various cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. When preferred cereal crops are absent, the pest can sustain itself on wild grass species, such as quackgrass (Elymus repens), making it resilient to crop rotation changes.
Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as an adult in the topsoil, under crop debris, or in the base of clump-forming grasses.
