These beetles are highly specialized wood-boring insects, traditionally grouped within the ambrosia beetle complex, characterized by their symbiotic relationship with specific fungi.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets broad-leaved trees, particularly in tropical and subtropical forest ecosystems. Highly valued species, including various Eucalyptus and hardwood trees, are the most susceptible. Infestations are often observed in trees that are stressed, injured, or have reduced natural defenses.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is strictly endophloeal. Adult beetles bore deeply into the sapwood and heartwood to establish galleries. Unlike many other wood-boring beetles, the larvae of Dinoplatypus do not digest the wood directly; instead, they feed on specific ambrosia fungi cultured by the parents within the tunnels. The entire brood development happens within this complex gallery system.

Damage and economic impact: The damage is twofold: physical and structural. The galleries carved by these beetles create significant structural defects in the timber, leading to severe economic losses in the lumber industry.
