Dinoplatypus agnatus is a species of wood-boring beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae, specifically the tribe Platypodini. Often referred to as ambrosia beetles, these insects are specialized xylophages that excavate galleries deep into the xylem of trees, where they cultivate specific fungal species as a primary food source for their larvae.

The host range of this pest primarily includes various hardwood tree species. While they show a preference for stressed, dying, or recently felled timber, high population densities can lead to attacks on healthy trees. This behavior makes them a significant concern in both silviculture and the timber processing industry, as their galleries penetrate deep into the high-value wood of the trunk.

The biology of Dinoplatypus agnatus is characterized by a complex symbiotic relationship with ambrosia fungi. Adult beetles bore through the bark and into the wood, creating tunnels. The females lay eggs within these galleries, and upon hatching, the larvae graze on the fungal mycelium growing on the tunnel walls. This cycle allows the beetles to inhabit wood despite its naturally low nutritional value.

Damage to host trees is both mechanical and physiological. The creation of galleries compromises the structural integrity of the wood and disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, leading to crown dieback. Economically, the presence of these beetles causes "pinhole" defects in timber, significantly reducing the market value and physical properties of the wood products.
