Dinoplatypus cavus is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. As a member of the tribe Platypodini, this insect is well-adapted to an endoxylophagous lifestyle, meaning it spends almost its entire life cycle deep within the trunks of its host trees, creating complex gallery systems.

This pest mainly targets various hardwood species, particularly in tropical and subtropical forest ecosystems. While it shows a preference for stressed, weakened, or dying trees, large populations of Dinoplatypus cavus are capable of attacking seemingly healthy trees, which can accelerate the decline of forest stands and lead to significant biomass loss.

The biology of this species is characterized by a unique symbiotic relationship with fungi. Adult females carry fungal spores into the tunnels they bore into the wood. The fungus develops on the gallery walls and serves as the primary food source for the developing larvae. The life cycle comprises egg, larval stages, pupa, and adult, all occurring within the tree's xylem.

The damage caused by this insect is significant, not only due to the physical excavation of the wood by larvae and adults but also because the introduced fungi cause extensive discoloration and wood rot. This activity compromises the structural integrity of the timber and severely degrades its commercial quality, rendering affected logs unsuitable for high-value wood products.
