Dinoplatypus chevrolati, commonly referred to as Chevrolat's ambrosia beetle, is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Platypodinae. These beetles are specialized wood-infesting insects that maintain a symbiotic relationship with specific fungi. This symbiosis is critical for their survival, as the larvae feed on the fungal "ambrosia" grown on the walls of their tunnels rather than the wood itself.
The beetle typically infests various species of deciduous trees. It is highly attracted to trees that are already physiologically stressed, dying, or recently felled. While it is primarily a secondary pest, it plays a significant role in forest ecology and the degradation of timber. In favorable environments, populations can spike, leading to widespread damage in timber stands.
The life cycle involves the female boring deep, intricate tunnels into the xylem of the host tree. During this process, she inoculates the wood with fungal spores. As the larvae hatch, they move through the gallery system, grazing on the fungal mats that proliferate along the tunnel walls. The entire development process, from egg to pupa and adult emergence, occurs protected within the tree trunk.
The damage caused by Dinoplatypus chevrolati is primarily characterized by tiny entrance holes on the bark and the accumulation of boring dust. Inside the tree, the galleries penetrate deep into the heartwood, severely compromising the structural integrity of the timber and significantly lowering its commercial value. The associated fungi often cause staining, which further degrades the wood quality.
Effective management requires integrated pest management (IPM) strategies focused on prevention. Silvicultural practices that maintain tree vigor are the first line of defense. Swift removal of infested logs and proper sanitation of forest sites are essential to reduce breeding habitats. In some cases, monitoring via semiochemical or pheromone-based traps is used to detect outbreaks before they reach critical levels.
