Host range: This species is a significant pest primarily affecting broad-leaved tree species. It demonstrates a high preference for beech trees Fagus, though it can infest a variety of other deciduous trees under stress or in forest stands with high populations. While often secondary, it can become a primary concern in damaged or weakened timber.

Biology and life cycle: The entire life cycle of Dinoplatypus luniger is completed within the interior of the tree trunk. Adult females drill into the xylem, creating elaborate gallery systems where they deposit eggs. The larvae subsist on fungal mycelium introduced by the parents into the galleries, making the beetle a 'fungus-farmer' rather than a direct consumer of wood tissue.
