Description

The Pale ambrosia beetle (Dinoplatypus pallidus) is a wood-boring insect belonging to the family Curculionidae, subfamily Platypodinae. These beetles are highly specialized, relying on a symbiotic relationship with ambrosia fungi, which they cultivate within their galleries to nourish their offspring.

This pest primarily affects hardwood tree species. By boring deep into the xylem of the trunk, the beetles compromise the structural integrity of the tree and facilitate the entry of pathogenic fungi, which can cause significant decay throughout the affected timber.

The biological development of Dinoplatypus pallidus is characterized by the construction of radial galleries. Adults bore into the wood and introduce fungal spores. The larvae do not consume the wood fibers directly; instead, they graze on the fungal gardens maintained by the adults within the tunnels.

Damage caused by this beetle is marked by the presence of fine frass on the bark surface, indicating active boring. As the population density increases, the cumulative impact of these galleries disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to canopy thinning, branch dieback, and eventually, tree mortality.
