Dinoplatypus uncatus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae, specifically the subfamily Scolytinae. These insects are classified as ambrosia beetles, which maintain a mutualistic relationship with certain fungi that provide essential nutrients for their larvae.

This pest primarily attacks the wood of tropical and subtropical trees. By boring deep into the xylem, the beetles establish extensive tunnel systems. This makes them particularly destructive to forest industries, as they penetrate deep into the heartwood, affecting structural integrity and timber quality.

The biology of the species revolves around its symbiotic relationship with fungi. Adult females bore galleries into the tree and inoculate them with fungal spores. The larvae do not feed on wood directly but instead graze on the fungal "ambrosia" growing on the tunnel walls, which requires specific moisture conditions within the tree.

Damage is characterized by small, circular entry holes often accompanied by frass (wood dust). The presence of the beetle causes "ambrosia streaks"—dark discolorations in the wood caused by fungal mycelium—which significantly reduce the market value of the timber and can weaken live trees, making them susceptible to secondary infections.
