Dinoplatypus uncinatus is a member of the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. This species belongs to the tribe Platypodinae, commonly known as ambrosia beetles, which are highly specialized wood-borers that maintain symbiotic relationships with fungi to survive within the woody tissue of host trees.

Host plants and damage range
This beetle primarily affects various broad-leaved trees in tropical and subtropical regions. It often targets weakened, stressed, or recently felled timber. In agricultural and forestry settings, it is considered a serious technical pest, as it can cause significant economic losses by degrading the quality of high-value timber through its boring activities.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle is closely linked to the cultivation of ambrosia fungi inside the galleries excavated by the beetles. Adults bore into the xylem, where they inoculate the wood with fungal spores. The larvae do not eat the wood directly but feed exclusively on the fungal mycelium growing on the walls of the tunnels. After reaching maturity, the new generation of adults emerges to locate new host trees.

Nature of damage and pest impact
The presence of Dinoplatypus uncinatus is indicated by small, circular entry holes and the accumulation of boring dust (frass) on the bark or at the base of the tree. The tunnels penetrate deep into the sapwood and heartwood, creating structural weaknesses. Furthermore, the introduction of fungi often causes internal staining and decay, which significantly lowers the market value of the timber.
