Description
The genus Dipsosphecia belongs to the clearwing moth family (Sesiidae) within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are characterized by transparent wings and a morphology that strongly mimics wasps or bees, which serves as an evolutionary defense mechanism against predators.
These pests primarily target the root systems of various herbaceous plants, specifically members of the Fabaceae (legume) family. Crops such as sainfoin and alfalfa are frequently reported as hosts, where the larvae cause significant structural damage to the root collar and primary taproot.
The biological cycle typically lasts one year. Adult moths emerge in the summer, mate, and deposit eggs near the base of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the roots, where they spend the majority of their development stage, effectively mining the tissue and disrupting the plant's vascular network.
