The six-belted clearwing (Dipsosphecia ichneumoniformis) is a moth belonging to the family Sesiidae, order Lepidoptera. This species is known for its mimicry, appearing similar to Hymenoptera such as wasps, which serves as a defensive mechanism against predators.
This pest primary affects various plants within the Fabaceae and Dipsacaceae families, including alfalfa, sainfoin, and scabious. The larvae act as root borers, feeding internally within the rootstock and causing chronic stress to the host plant.
The life cycle is typically univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adult moths are active during the summer, laying eggs near the base of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the roots, where they spend the majority of their development cycle, often overwintering inside the root tissue.
