These insects are well-known for their resemblance to wasps or bees, which acts as a defense mechanism against predators. The clearwing moths are recognized by their characteristic transparent wings and wasp-like appearance.

Target crops. This species primarily infests woody plants within the Rosaceae family. It is considered a significant pest in orchards and nurseries, causing localized damage to the cambium and xylem layers of trees such as apple and pear, and various ornamental or wild shrub species found in the garden landscape.

Biology and life cycle. The development cycle usually spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult females deposit eggs near bark crevices or at the base of branches. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the plant tissue, creating tunnels beneath the bark, which serves as a protected environment for their growth and survival during the larval stages.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The primary injury is caused by the larval feeding activity, which creates galleries inside the trunk or branches. This tunneling disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to wilting, branch dieback, and reduced fruit production. Persistent infestations significantly weaken the host tree, making it vulnerable to secondary pests and various plant diseases.

Protection measures. Effective control requires an integrated pest management approach focused on prevention and timing:

• Pruning and removal of infested plant parts to reduce the population density.
