Indian shield bug

The Indian shield bug (Dolycoris indicus) is a prominent pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pentatomidae. This species is widely distributed in regions with warm climates and is recognized for its ability to cause significant economic losses in agricultural sectors by damaging a diverse range of host plants.

The pest primarily targets cereal and legume crops, including wheat, rice, sorghum, and chickpeas. Its polyphagous nature allows it to switch hosts depending on the season and the developmental stage of the plants. During the growth phase, the bugs focus on the most nutritious parts of the plant, such as developing stems, leaves, and reproductive structures.

The life cycle of Dolycoris indicus typically involves overwintering as adults, hidden within crop debris, leaf litter, or soil cracks. In the spring, they emerge and begin mating. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The nymphal stages pass through five instars before reaching maturity, all while actively feeding on plant sap.

The damage caused by the Indian shield bug is largely due to its piercing-sucking mouthparts. By injecting enzymes into the plant tissue, the bug liquefies the cell contents, leading to localized necrosis, wilting, and malformation of grains. This feeding habit significantly reduces crop yield and compromises the quality of harvested grains, making them unsuitable for processing.

To manage and control the population of this pest, agronomists recommend an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• implementing timely crop rotation to interrupt the life cycle;
• maintaining field hygiene by clearing crop residues and weeds;
• monitoring adult migration during the early growth stages of crops;
• applying selective insecticides when pest density exceeds established economic injury levels.
