Drepanococcus is a genus of scale insects within the family Coccidae, known for being significant pests on various woody plants. These insects are sap-sucking parasites that can cause substantial damage to orchards and ornamental gardens by depriving plants of essential nutrients and weakening their overall structure.
The host range of Drepanococcus includes a wide variety of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. They predominantly settle on stems, branches, and the undersides of leaves. Because they are often protected by a waxy or leathery covering, they can easily go undetected until significant damage to the plant's health becomes visible.
The life cycle involves distinct stages including eggs, mobile nymphs (crawlers), and sessile adults. The females are typically sedentary, fixed to the host plant surface, while the crawlers represent the dispersal stage.
