Pigeon pea scale

The Pigeon pea scale (Drepanococcus cajani) is a significant insect pest belonging to the Coccidae family within the order Hemiptera. These soft scale insects are known for their parasitic lifestyle, which can lead to substantial economic losses in agricultural systems, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

This pest primarily infests the pigeon pea plant (Cajanus cajan) and various other legumes and fruit trees. The insects establish colonies on young branches and foliage, where they remain fixed and feed continuously on the plant's sap, which serves as their primary food source.

The life cycle of Drepanococcus cajani involves a transition from eggs to mobile crawlers, which are the main dispersal stage of the pest. Once a suitable site is found, they settle down and develop into sessile adults. The adult females secrete a protective waxy covering that shields them from predators and environmental stressors.

The primary damage caused by these insects is the direct loss of plant vigor due to nutrient depletion. Furthermore, their feeding process often results in the excretion of honeydew, which fosters the growth of sooty mold. This mold covers leaves, effectively blocking photosynthesis and further weakening the host plant.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Drepanococcus cajani effectively. Growers are advised to implement regular field scouting to identify infestations early. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides targeting the crawler stage. Additionally, cultural practices such as pruning affected branches and maintaining plant health can help mitigate the impact of the infestation.
