Green scale

The Green scale (Drepanococcus virescens) is a significant pest species belonging to the family Coccidae within the order Hemiptera. It is primarily known for its destructive impact on various agricultural crops and ornamental species in tropical and subtropical regions across the globe.

This insect affects a broad range of host plants, including economically important crops such as citrus, coffee, cocoa, and mango trees. By feeding on the phloem sap of the host, the scale insect siphons essential nutrients, which weakens the plant's structural integrity and overall vigor over time.

The biology of Drepanococcus virescens is characterized by a protective waxy scale covering the female, which serves as a shield against environmental stress and many pesticide treatments. The life cycle involves several nymphal stages, during which the insects disperse to new parts of the host plant before settling to feed.

The damage is twofold: direct loss of sap leads to leaf yellowing, stunting, and fruit drop, while the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus blocks sunlight from the leaves, significantly reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis and lowering the quality of the produce.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:
